You should always use proper boat motor maintenance after taking a trip in salt water to keep your motor up and running for years to come. Here are some helpful tips you should follow in order for this to happen:

* flush out the engine after every outing

* purchase some "rabbit ears" (a metal clamp which connects two rubber seals), apply this on the lower area where the water is pulled up and attach a water hose.

* turn on the engine and let the water pump do the work. (steer clear of area and do NOT shift gears)

* make sure the water pump has good water flow

* upon completion of flushing, take the fuel line and disconnect it — this allows the fuel in the carburetor to be burned off by the engine.

* once these procedures are done, turn off the key and battery switch (if there is one)

* check for fuel or water leaks by taking the engine cowling off

* everything needs wiped down and an anti-corrosive (ex. WD-40). It is important that all moving parts are lubricated.

* wipe down the cowling and place it back. Make sure the engine is covered between trips.

* It is important to always use fresh fuel. Drain tanks and properly dispose of fuel at proper authorities at the end of season.

Mold and mildew is the scourge of boaters. Fortunately, it’s easy to remove and there are a number of products that work well. You need to use different chemicals for various parts of your boat, depending on what material you wish to clean.

Prevention can minimize the amount of cleaning needed in spring commissioning. In the fall, wipe down surfaces with a Lysol and water solution to kill bacteria and remove grime, which can act as a breeding ground for mold spores. A solution of 50% white vinegar and 50% water also is effective.

When cleaning fabric and vinyl, bleach mixed with water works well. Bleach can degrade the fibers of both the stitching and backing of vinyl, so care must be used.
